CDD49 Valentinite
Machacamarca District (Colavi District), Saavedra Province, Potosi Department, Bolivia
4.1x 3.0x 3.7 cm
$82

A very good example of this rare antimony oxide-- these crystals are simply massive but he usual standard of the species.  For comparison, there was recently. find in China (I have offered some on this site) and the valentine crystals on those specimens were tufts of acicular needles.  Granted, those are prettier, but these have impressive size.  From the find made about 4 years ago.

Huanzala Mine, Huallanca District, Dos de Mayo Prov., Peru
6.7x 5.0x 3.0 cm
$48

A nice reference sample of chalcopyrite from the Huanzala Mine.  This has long been one of the most prolific specimen producing mines in the world, the source of nearly all the pyrite that winds up in gift shops and used for arts and crafts.  For all the pyrite it has produced however, chalcopyrite has always been something if a rarity at the mine, though it has was a bit more present in the major pocket uncovered last year.

CDD70 Liddicoatite Tourmaline
Vakinankaratra Region, Madagascar
4.0x 3.2x 2.4 cm
$44

A dark, terminated crystal of liddicoatite from Madagascar.  This one is a bit odd, in that a decent portion of it is an empty cavity, as opposed to the usual solid prism.

CDD73 Spinel
Vakinankaratra Region, Madagascar
2.1x 1.3x 1.3 cm
$38

A nice thumbnail sized sample of sharp spinel crystals from Madagascar-- not a species you often see from the island available as specimens.

Vakinankaratra Region, Madagascar
1.8x 0.9x 0.5 cm
$38

Aegirine is best known from a couple localities in Malawi, and then as an accessory mineral at Mont St. Hilaire in Canada.  This was an oddity I cam across on a trip to Madagascar-- a perfectly terminated arginine crystal from somewhere in the central part of the Island.

Berry Materials Corp. Quarry (North Vernon Plant), North Vernon, Jennings Co., Indiana
7.4x 3.4x 3.5 cm
$42

A nice sample of calcite on a sedimentary matrix, form the Berry Materials Quarry.  These were found decades ago, and are in my opinion some of the most distinctive calcites from the various quarries that dot the Midwest.  This is a decent reference, showcasing the rounded, honey colored crystals that the locality is known for.

Julcani Dist., Angaraes Prov., Huancavelica Prov., Peru
8.0x 5.5x 2.9 cm
$86

A very nice tetrahedrite specimen, with a super lustrous, complete crystal nicely isolated on a matrix of spiky quartz-- they tend to be somewhat more jumbled, but some of the pieces from this pocket were rather nice.

CQQ17 Chalcedony

Royal George Mine, Tasmania, Australia
6.5x 4.0x 3.1 cm
$68

A very rare sample of torbernite from Tasmania.  You see plenty of torbernite around from France, Congo, Portugal, etc and quite a bit of radioactive material from Australia (saleeite, davidite and so on) but this is the first torbernite (or more generally, the first radioactive mineral) that I've personally seen from Tasmania.

CQQ21 Quartz (Japan Law Twin)
Pampa Blanca Mine, Castrovirreina Prov., Huancavelica Dept., Peru
5.2x 4.9x 2.4 cm

A nice example of stalactitic prehnite from Mali.  The prehnites from this locality tend to be spherical aggregates, or semi-formless groups of such spheres-- this one is pleasantly thinner and more obviously stalactitic.

CQQ31 Quartz var. Amethyst
Piedra Parada, Las Vigas, Veracruz, Mexico
6.5x 5.7x 3.6 cm
$48

A light purple amethyst point on a bit of matrix, from recent finds at Las Vigas. (Sorry for the bad picture)

A bright, ball-shaped aggregate of pyrite crystals from Texas.

CQQ33 Pyrite (pyritized brachiopod fossil)
Sylvania, Ohio, United States
4.5x 2.8x 2.2 cm

A cool brachiopod from Ohio, from the same locality that produces the spectacular celestites.  I thought it was interesting.  I bought a couple, this was the best from the group ... I did keep one for myself though, because it looks a bit like a potsticker dumpling made of pyrite.

CQQ35 Andradite Garnet
Bendoukou, Sandare District, Kayes Region, Mali
3.3x 1.9x 1.2 cm
$48

An interesting "toenail" sized specimen, consisting of a pair of unusually elongated andradite crystals.  It's rather unusual for this locality-- they tend to occur as fairly perfect dodecahedrons (or clusters of them), or only have slight modifications around the edges.

CRR21 Pyrite
Quiruvilca Dist., Santiago de Chuco Prov., La Libertad Dept., Peru

A large cabinet specimen of pyrite form the Quiruvilca Mine.  This one is not quite as bright as the Huanzala pieces, but it is composed of octahedral crystals-- one of the rarer pyrite habits from Peru.

Quiruvilca is mainly known for its arsenic minerals-- orpiment, realgar, and native arsenic, though it does on occaision produce these pyrites.

Cheap for a pyrite this large.

CRR34 Quartz

An unusual specimen, consisting of a quartz cast after calcite.  The quartz crystallized over the calcite, then at some point the calcite naturally dissolved away, leaving a cast behind.

CRR42 Fluorite
Stoneco Quarry, Clay Center, Wood Co., Ohio, USA
3.3x 3.1x 1.7 cm

A very nice, sharp miniature specimen of brown fluorite from the Midwestern USA.

Acari Mine, Caraveli Province, Arequipa Department, Peru
4.0x 3.0x 2.8 cm

A beautiful example of chrysocolla with an overgrowth of druzy quartz, from the Acari mine in Peru.  This piece is from my last trip-- the material was very abundant then, though there was almost none to be found this time, and what was available was quite expensive.

CRR51 Bismuth

CRR65 Calcite
Engineering Aggregates Corp. Quarry, Logansport, Cass Co., Indiana, USA
2.5x 1.5x 1.4 cm
$38

One of the fun things about visiting smaller shows in the American Midwest is looking for unusual calcites.  The various quarries in the region have produced a wide array of calcite habits and forms-- here's one of the less well known ones: a tapered barrel shaped crystal from Logansport, Indiana.  This is actually quite a nice thumbnail, even if it wasn't for the relatively odd locality.

CRR66 Allanite-(Ce)
Sakeishi, Yamanashi Prefecture, Honshu Island, Japan
2.5x 0.7x 0.6 cm
$72

A rare allanite crystal from Japan.  It isn't too common to find good allanite crystals in general, but to find one from Japan is particularly unusual.  It may or may not be repaired-- I can't really tell.  Either way, it's a Japanese allanite-- how often do you see any rare earth minerals from that country, and so well crystallized at that?

CRR67 Stibnite
Baia Sprie, Maramures, Romania
2.2x 1.7x 1.6 cm
$26

A nice thumbnail sized sample of stibnite on matrix, from the now closed Romanian sulfide mines.

Hoosier Quarry, Salem, Washington Co., Indiana, United States
3.1x 3.1x 2.2 cm
$24

One of the fun things about visiting smaller shows in the American midwest is looking for unusual calcites.  The various quarries in the region have produced a wide array of calcite habits and forms-- here's one of the less well known ones: elongated grayish crystals from the Hoosier Quarry in Salem, Indiana.  This is a decent reference piece.

CRR71 Adamite
Mina Ojuela, Mapimi, Durango, Mexico
3.8x 2.9x 2.4 cm

A nice cluster of adamite sprays, perched against a limonite matrix.

CRR72 Galena

CAA02 Celestite
Sylvania, Ohio, United States
10.3x 8.6x 5.5 cm
$84

A very nice example of celestite from Ohio-- i particularly liked this one because the crystals seemed just a bit gemmier and with better color than what I'm used to seeing in celestite from the American Midwest.
