CHC68 Pyrite
Karibib Area, Erongo Region, Namibia
4.1x 3.3x 3.0 cm
$56

A pyrite sample from an odd location-- you usually don't associate sulfide minerals with contemporary Namibian mineral production, but here this is.... Karibib is located to the east of Erongo Mountain, and the area is home to a number of industrial rock quarries-- I suspect this came from one of those.

CHC69 Beryl var. Aquamarine on Orthoclase
Erongo Mountain, Erongo Region, Namibia
4.0x 1.3x 1.1 cm

A cute sample with a prismatic blue aquamarine on matrix, from Erongo Mountain, Namibia.

CHC70 Beryl var. Aquamarine on Orthoclase
Erongo Region, Namibia
4.0x 1.3x 1.1 cm

An elongated aquamarine crystal with some color zoning (the color seems to be concentrated near the center.). I suspect this is from Klein Spitzkoppe and not Erongo Mountain-- the local dealers (which much more detailed than in other countries I've visited) don't always have perfect information-- and the elongated habit and relative transparency seem much more like Klein Spitzkoppe than Erongo Mountain.

CVV21 Titanite
Minas Gerais, Brazil
4.3x 1.9x 1.3 cm

An unusual titanite crystal that seems to be a double twin-- it has the usual twinning plane along the top edge, though there seems to be another one diagonal across the side as well. My lack of crystallography knowledge is painfully obvious in this description.... either way, a nice titanite even.

Sar-e-Sang, Badakhshan, Afghanistan
5.3x 5.0x 3.0 cm

A couple well-exposed crystal of lazurite, one partial and the other mostly complete, on  a marble matrix.

The mines at Sar-e-Sang have been producing for over 6,000 years.  They supplied the lapis that adorns King Tutankhamen’s famous burial mask, as well as various Greek and Roman artifacts. Although a lot of lapidary grade lazurite now comes from Chile, crystals of this size and quality have only come from Afghanistan.

A decently sized example of austinite from finds made in the summer of 2019 at the Ojuela Mine. Although it resembles the much more common adamite,  austinite incorporates calcium in the chemical composition, and has always been rare at the mine.

A nice example of light yellowish apophyllite from the Daye Mine. Quite a nice reference for the locality, you tend to see it as an accessory with other things like hubeiite or amethyst, but it  tends to be one of the more overlooked species from the locality.

Shuikoushan Mine, Hunan Prov., China
12.8x 9.0x 5.3 cm

A nice example of orange-red sphalerite crystals scattered on a quartz covered matrix, with calcite.  Not perfect, but a good reference example of this material-- because of the reddish color of the matrix, and the red-orange color of the sphalerite, the sphalerite crystals get a little lost in the images, but in person there is more luster to help them stand out just a bit more.

CMM04 Pyrite
Huanzala Mine, Huallanca District, Dos de Mayo Prov., Peru
7.4x 5.4x 2.5 cm
